The storm of the century
|
The Storm of the Century is were many damages were to come and sadly lives were lost but were also left with many questions. Like how did this horrible disaster affect the people living where the storm took place? How were they kept safe? How were they evacuated? Was there a better way to handle this situation?

Safety |
It was on a Friday March 12, 1993 where thunderstorms came from the Gulf of Mexico and were travelling near Florida. According to Pinellas County newsletter in Florida the newspapers had said there was a coming storm but no one could have seen what was soon to be coming. In the states that were affected by the storm many regular work days were put on pause due to damage and tons of snow. Things put on a break were flights that delayed and cancelelled and then soon continued with airports closing and also highways were blocked for safety. According to the Hartford Courant, a newpaper and website in the north of the United States said that there was at least 10 inches of snow and that schools would be closed until all roads and sidewalks were clear.

Evacuation
Evacuation was still hard to handle even though information and news reported this tragic storm to happen. In parts of Florida citizens were evacuated from the flooded shores and put to some sort of safety. Some areas weren't even told to evacuate, but most damaged areas were mostly remained the same but business and travel were shut down.
the mistakes
Some mistakes I think were made were mostly a warning of the tragic storm. They had in the newspapers and the news say that this storm was coming, but some meteorologist discovered a chance of having a storm. That was until further studies were made and now it was a guarantee a storm was coming near. I think better preparation with evacuation because there were many deaths in this disaster and people getting stuck in the blizzard so, I think it could have been minimized with more protection and a much better warning. Especially when the southern states rarely get snow and were not ready for the cold.
